About

KCA is a design-oriented firm with a focus on urban residential architecture. Every project aims to bring natural daylight into the centre of buildings, to foster a sense of connection between spaces, and to maintain a consistent simplicity in all details. We believe that the most successful projects are those where the we are able to engage in a holistic design process, taking on everything from the base building to the interiors to the landscape beyond.

Our experience with the City of Toronto approvals process includes negotiating through planning reviews, successfully obtaining zoning variances, and getting building permits. Good relationships with engineers and contractors are central to the design development process, and true collaboration between the design and construction teams is the key to the success of every project.

KYRA CLARKSON | Principal

Kyra founded the firm in 2007 with a focus on creating warm, modern houses that sit thoughtfully in the Toronto fabric. From initial conversations with our clients, through all stages of design and construction, Kyra is personally involved in every project.

Kyra worked for eight years at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in New York City, followed by two years at Shim-Sutcliffe Architects upon returning to Toronto in 2005. She holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and has been licensed to practice since 2000. Kyra was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2022, and holds accreditations with the Ontario Association of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Along with her husband, Christopher Glaisek, she also runs MODERNest Inc., which develops and builds moderately-priced, architect-designed, houses with a modern sensibility in downtown neighbourhoods.

Kyra lives downtown with her husband, teenaged sons and their dog, Luna. She is an avid road cyclist.

SHEILA MATHIES | Senior Designer / Project Manager

Sheila grew up in a small town in Muskoka, which is Ontario’s cottage country. She studied English and Art History at Queen’s University, and Architecture at the University of Waterloo, including a term in Rome. Prior to joining Kyra Clarkson Architect in 2013, she worked for firms in New York, London (UK) and Toronto. When she is not obsessing over the finer details of her projects with KCA, she is designing quilts or out on a hike with her ridgeback, Scarlett.

INNES SHELLEY | Intermediate Designer

Innes completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Liverpool, followed by a Master of Architecture and Postgraduate Diploma at the University of Westminster. He has previously worked at several offices in Toronto, London, and Shanghai, gaining experience in residential, retail and heritage work. Away from the studio he likes to spend time outdoors, at live music events, and exploring new and interesting places.
