Just steps from bustling Yonge Street, we reimagined a narrow semi-detached house, typical of Toronto, as a calm, light-filled family home. The existing structure, last renovated in the 1980s, was constrained by split levels and a pinched rear footprint that limited flexibility and spatial generosity. Working closely with the client, we reorganized the plan, extended the rear to the full lot width, and introduced a clear vertical sequence anchored by a sculptural stair that brings daylight deep into the interior.
A restrained palette of naturally-weathering wood, fibre-cement, steel, and glass defines the architecture. At the front, the underside of the wood facade curves gently into the ceiling at the recessed entry and foyer, softening the transition from street to interior. The upper level steps back at both the front and rear to create private roof terraces overlooking the city. Inside, open living spaces are subtly divided by the stair’s vertical wood screen, balancing openness with moments of enclosure. Built-in millwork, generous wall surfaces, and carefully placed windows support the client’s art collection while maintaining a sense of serenity.
A laneway house completes the project, introducing a secondary dwelling above parking, and shaping a courtyard at the rear. The compact suite is organized around a skylit stair and an efficient open plan, with integrated cabinetry and a window bench that frames views back to the house and garden.
